Raymond L. Miller

Raymond Lloyd Miller, 87, of Topeka, Kansas passed away on September 8, 2017 at Midland Hospice House surrounded by family.

He was born on June 13, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan to Lloyd and Irene Miller. Ray grew up in Lansing and later moved to Dearborn, Michigan where he graduated from Dearborn High School. Ray married Lorraine Alice (Griggs) Miller on December 15, 1952. She preceded him in death in 1978.

Ray entered into the United States Air Force on June 30, 1951. He became a pilot and flew B-29 aircrafts in the Korean War and flew C-130 aircrafts in the Vietnam War. He retired as a highly decorated Command Pilot after 20 years of service achieving the rank of Lt. Col. stationed at Forbes Air Force Base.

After the Air Force, Ray was a Vice President at Merchants National Bank and later worked for the Kansas State Department of Aging before retiring.

Ray donated his time to many organizations, including the Lions Club, where he served as President from 2001-2002. He also volunteered at the Topeka Combat Air Museum.

Although he had traveled throughout the world as an Air Force Pilot, his greatest passion became traveling to Africa on safari taking photographs of animals, people and the amazing scenery. Along the way Ray made life-long friends who shared the same passion.

Ray is survived by his children, Mark Miller, Dale Miller, Brian (Merilea) Miller, Barbara Sawyer, and Ann (Ron) Shelton; grandchildren, Nicholas Miller, Beau Miller, Beatrice Sawyer, Emily Sawyer, David Miller, Jon Sawyer, Molly Miller, Connor Shelton, and Rachel Shelton; great-grandchildren, Ava Wiseman, Vivian Wiseman, and Aurora Fisackerly.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday September 15, 2017 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Topeka Zoo, 635 SW Gage, Topeka, Kansas 66606 or to the Combat Air Museum, 7016 SE Forbes Ave Topeka, Kansas 66619.
