Rachel Young Graves, 99, died October 10, 2006, at Aldersgate Village, Topeka, KS. She was born August 14, 1907, the daughter of William P. and Gertrude Bower Young, Van Wert, OH. In 1931, at K.S.T.C. (now Pittsburg State University), she received her BA degree in music education. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma and Sigma Alpha Iota sororities.
Mrs. Graves played the violin, participated in choral and orchestral groups, and taught in public schools in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Michigan. Her husband, Marvin L. Graves, died soon after their retirement and move from their home in Wyandotte, MI., to Green Valley, AZ. There, she was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church, and P.E.O. and an enthusiastic volunteer for her church and various community organizations. Later, she moved to Villa Compana, then to Amber Lights in Tucson. In June, 2001, Rachel moved to Topeka.
She is survived by two nephews: George Taber, Stevensville, MI., and John O. Hankammer, Topeka. Two nephews, James D. Cramer, Tucson, and William A. Hankammer, Pittsburg, preceded her in death. A memorial service will be at Aldersgate Village at a later date. Cremation with inurnment in Tucson is planned.
