Petra A. Freers, 67, of Topeka, passed away, Sunday, November 27, 2005, at her home. She was born July 27, 1938 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the daughter of Prosper and Dorothy Johnson of Union City, MI.
She graduated valedictorian of her class from Union City High School in Michigan, and received a BA degree in Business Education from Michigan State University. It was at Michigan State where she met and married her husband, Ted Freers.
Petra taught high school business classes, worked for various businesses and most recently conducted a bookkeeping service from her home. She was also active volunteering at a nearby elementary school, the library and Meals on Wheels. Petra's interests were diverse. She loved to read books and work on crossword puzzles, traveled to exotic destinations such as Russia and Indonesia, and rarely missed watching a KU Jayhawk basketball game.
Petra is survived by her husband Ted; son Robert Freers of Mount Vernon, Washington; daughter Mary Day of Lewisville, Texas; and brother David Johnson of Tucson, Arizona.
The family invites friends to Petra's memorial service at 10:00 am, Thursday, December 1, at Susanna Wesley Methodist Church. Petra will be cremated and her ashes will be interred at a later date in Union City, Michigan where her late mother and father were laid to rest.
In lieu of flowers, Petra desired to have memorial contributions made to Susanna Wesley Methodist Church, 7433 SW 29th Street, Topeka, KS 66614; the Union City Alumni Scholarship Fund, c/o Union City Community School, 430 St. Joseph Street, Union City, MI 49094; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
