Peter Lewis Whitebird, 68, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021.
He was born July 19, 1952, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, the son of Peter Whitebird Sr. and Joyce (Burks) Gibson. He attended Topeka High School and a local technical college for graphic design.
Peter was a man of great faith. He had an incredible life journey that he felt was specifically designed for him. Though he was proud of his Native American Indian heritage and frequently shared stories of being a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indian Tribe, he would tell you that his true identity was in Jesus Christ.
He served as an ordained minister of the Gospel for more than two decades, both as a pastor and music evangelist. He began pastoring at Trinity Baptist Church before he took his cross-denominational, God-ordained, music and preaching ministry on the road. He traveled and ministered at churches, rodeos, fairs, prisons, and a variety of other special venues across the U.S. for many years. In 2017, his journey led him from full-time music ministry to full-time pastoring again in Topeka at Highland Park Baptist Church.
God bestowed many talents upon Peter throughout his life journey. There wasn't a thing he couldn't do. He was a craftsman by trade who spent 21 years in the construction industry and was an extremely talented, self-taught caricature and portrait artist. His love for singing, country music and writing led to producing seven Christian Country albums with sixteen chart-topping Christian Country radio hits, twelve of which soared all the way to number one. He received many awards and nominations. He also had a live recorded DVD with two published books: Journey to the Center of Life and Believer's Boot Camp. Peter had an ornery, fun side and enjoyed entertaining others with his alter ego, "Bubba Burks". In his spare time, he loved to play golf with many of his golf buddies, stay up to date on current events, and had a strong allegiance to his country.
Second only to the Lord, was his love for his family. Peter will be remembered by his loving wife of 42 years, Judy Carol Davidson of Topeka. They were united in marriage on July 6, 1979 in Topeka, Kansas. To this union were their four children, Dana Flippo, Travis (Maria) Whitebird, Christa (Todd) Bohnen, and Erin (Cason) Corley. Other survivors include his sisters, Donna (Dale) Baker, Kelli Lambert, and Pamela McGimpsey; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Duane Hazlett and brother-in-law, William McGimpsey.
Peter's calling was not to make music or simply entertain, but to communicate the true life message of Jesus Christ. Peter deeply loved his family and had a strong desire to teach and lead his children, grandchildren, friends and family to the Lord. He will be remembered for many things, but mostly for his love of God and family.
The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Victory City Church, 2622 SE 6th Ave., Topeka, KS 66607. Cremation will follow the visitation.
A Celebration of his Life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 5, 2021 at Victory City Church.
