Percy Powell, 78, of Topeka, Kansas passed away March 7, 2023 at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with lung cancer. He was born in Brownsville, TN to Percy Powell Sr and Opal Marshall on July 28, 1944. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and Brownsville, TN. His family moved to Topeka in 1960, his forever home. He attended Topeka High School with his brother Jack. His childhood was an idyllic time in his life, which he recalled fondly and often shared many of those stories with others.
He lived the most colorful and rewarding life. His passions in life were many that included, but were not limited to cooking, which would mean so much more if you've ever had the chance to visualize or partake in any of his culinary creations. He made many of the bright and flashy clothes he wore, thus learning how to successfully navigate a sewing machine from his mother (Opal) and the hat and shoe combinations he created were adored by many. He loved painting, he basically transformed many items into beautiful masterpieces, with nothing being off limits if you ever saw his cars or drove by his house. He dabbled in woodcarving, shooting pool, throwing darts, golfing with his grandson, playing in his band, creating beautiful cakes and ice carvings for countless weddings, graduation parties, work events or for no reason other than he just wanted release small tidbits of his creative personality. His most important role was being a husband to Janet, a father to Cindy and grandfather or (GOAT) to his only grandson, Tyler as they spent many hours bonding at the golf course or at one of their favorite watering holes. He was well known by many and never met a stranger, everything about Percy was on full display, what you see is what you get, The Man, The Myth, The Legend.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janet (Miller); mother, Opal Marshall; daughter, Cindy (Terry) all of Topeka, KS and grandson Tyler (Madison) of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Lonnell "Jack" Powell.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of life, which will be held March 11, 2023 at the Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Family and friends will be invited to share memories of Percy around 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 171335, Kansas City, KS 66117.
