Peggy Scott Kimbrough

Peggy Scott Kimbrough, 92, passed away on March 15, 2021 surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in Topeka June 16, 1928, Peggy was the first of three children born to Walter and Agnes (Skadsen) Scott, Sr. In 1946 she graduated from Topeka High School, where she was a cheerleader and was involved in student government. She attended Washburn University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Peggy married Lyle Kimbrough in 1949. After Lyle had completed dental school and started his dental practice, Peggy was ready to start a family. She said that being a mother was the occupation she most wanted. More than once she took her four children across the country in their station wagon to visit extended family and have adventures, tent camping the entire trip, while Lyle stayed home to keep his dental appointments. Later in life, Peggy traveled through Europe, China, Russia and South America.

After Peggy and Lyle divorced, Peggy worked as secretary for federal and state agencies. She then opened Kimbrough Liquor Store in Brookwood Shopping Center, which she operated for 20 years. She was involved in her community as a literacy volunteer and as a volunteer with Meals On Wheels. She attended Central Congregational Church. She was thankful to God for her life and family. She was a devoted fan of the Jayhawks, the Royals and of Washburn men's and women's basketball teams. She enjoyed an active life and regular gatherings with her THS classmates before her health sidelined her.

A woman of strong work ethic, Peggy has been described as: honest, quick to help, smart, fun, faithful, generous, and a caring friend. Someone who never met a stranger, she was a great friend to many, and was well loved by her family. Peggy loved playing cards and board games with her parents, her children and friends, and gardening.

Those she leaves to cherish her memory include her children: Kathy Kimbrough of Topeka; Maren Brose and husband, Mike of Tulsa, OK; Dana (Dan) Kimbrough and fiancée, Cherie of St. Peters, MO; and Julie Roy and husband, John of Topeka; four grandchildren: Dallas Brose, John (Ashlee) Kimbrough, Jillian Roy and Jaclyn Roy, and her sister, Sylvia Foreman and husband Dick. She is also survived by numerous other relatives and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother, Walt.

The family wishes to thank the staff of McCrite Plaza Assisted Living for their loving and compassionate care.

Memorial contributions may be made in Peggy's memory to Meals on Wheels of Eastern Kansas.

Honoring Peggy's wishes, cremation is planned and a memorial service will be held on April 2, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, Kansas 66604. The family will greet friends and relatives one hour prior to the service.
