Pauline "Pat" Ann Lowry Dwyer, age 78, passed away peacefully in the arms of her only son on Saturday morning, October 15, 2022, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, KS after a courageous battle with cancer.
Pat was born on April 21, 1944, to Pauline Shepherd Lowry and James Dewey Poore and raised in Miami, Florida. As she began her junior high school years, Pat began participating in cotillion and debutante balls where she eventually met her first husband and father to her only child. She graduated from Miami High School in 1962. Pat began her collegiate career at Miami Dade Community College with an Associates of Arts degree in Education and then completed her BA in Education from the University of Miami in 1966. While at the University of Miami, she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. In 1979, she received her master's degree in Education Psychology and Counseling from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.
Pat pursued a teaching career and loved serving children through interactive education starting in Miami, then Colorado, Kansas, Nevada and finally retiring from teaching in Topeka, Kansas after 35 years. While teaching in Topeka for 25 years, she taught Science at the Topeka Adventure Center and Williams Magnet School. Pat was honored to be a lifetime Member of MENSA and the Prometheus Society for the intellectually gifted, while also being a published Poet.
During breaks in her teaching career, Pat was also the Director of Social Services, Real Estate Agent, and Director of Big Brother/Big Sisters. In fact, the United States Air Force Academy dedicated a congressional patch and formal Eagle Award for to her and the Colorado Springs Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Upon retirement, Pat continued working part time customer service and home health jobs as she loved helping other people. Besides working her part time jobs, Pat loved spending time with her grandchildren, family, friends, writing poetry, reading, science, science fiction, geology and paleontology.
Pat had a bright and energetic personality, was extremely outgoing and willing to try anything once. She was known for her generosity, compassion and love for other people and had a sixth sense of when someone needed help. She was unselfish in her giving and love to other, which really defined who Pat really was as a person. At one point in her life, she was supporting over 20 charities per month because she felt so compelled. Pat touched so many lives directly and indirectly with her infectious smile, laugh, love, generosity and passion for life. She will be forever loved and missed!
Pat is survived by her only son, Ed "Shep" Lowry and daughter-in-law, Kristine Lowry of Franklin, Tennessee, grandchildren, Christian Lowry of Franklin, TN, Kaitlyn Lowry of Colorado Springs, CO, Matthew Lowry of Franklin, TN and Robert Steck of Chapman, KS, sister, Marion Hawks of Topeka, KS, nephew Curtis Hawks of Omaha, NE and niece, Heather Noyes of Topeka, KS. She is preceded in death by her mother, Pauline Lowry, father, James Poore, uncle, Ed Lowry, grandsons Scotty Lowry and Luke Lowry, and granddaughter Faith Lowry.
Family and friends are invited to attend her funeral services at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 10th & Lane, on Friday, November 4, 2022. The viewing will begin at 1:00 pm with the service beginning at 2:00 pm followed by a dessert reception to honor Pat's life.
