Paul Heidebrecht

Paul M. Heidebrecht, 91 Topeka, passed away on Monday, February 11, 2008 at Brewster Health Center.

He was born in Watova, Oklahoma on March 9, 1916, the son of Jacob and Anna Regier Heidebrecht.

After graduating from Nowata High School, he entered Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, where he obtained at A. B. degree. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from October, 1941 to October, 1945. Upon return, he entered the University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration and obtained a Master's degree. He then began employment as Director of the Union County Social Welfare Department in LaGrande, Oregon. from June, 1947 to January, 1950. He was a psychiatric social worker for the Veterans Administration in Wichita and Topeka. He worked for the Kansas Board of Social and Rehabilitation Services in Vocation Rehabilitation Services and Services for the Blind. He retired from S.R.S in 1981.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Rehabilitation Association.

His interests were organic gardening, bowling, and fishing.

He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Topeka, where he taught Dr. Smith's Bible Class.

He married Esther Shively in Chicago on the University of Chicago campus, where they were both students, on May 12, 1946. He is survived by his wife, Esther; daughter, Mary Transue and husband, Charles of Lawrence; sister, Anne Lafferty, Coffeyville; brother, John Heidebrecht and wife B.J. of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Memorial services and burial will be private. Mr. Heidebrecht will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2008.
