Paul Everett Huss, 92, of Topeka passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014 surrounded by his loving family and caretakers at Brewster Health Center. Paul was born December 18, 1921 in Minot, North Dakota to Gustav and Christa (Pence) Huss. He attended North Dakota State University where he was president of Theta Chi Fraternity and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Paul enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served at several bases before being assigned to the Philippines. Upon his discharge as a First Lieutenant, he returned to Minot and married girlfriend Clarajean Olson June 7, 1947. Paul and Cj met when they were paired up at a piano recital--he was 10 and she was 8. Over the years they saw each other occasionally, but became reacquainted when Paul came home on leave visiting a friend in the hospital and realized the pretty Charge Nurse was the girl from the piano recital. Their love story lasted 66 years and was an inspiration to those who knew them. In 1948, they moved to Topeka where Paul worked for Goodyear until his retirement. Paul and Cj traveled all over the world making many friends, especially the Armfields of Sydney, Australia. Sue Armfield Bate was considered to be their Aussie daughter, and she and her family have visited many times including this past Christmas.
Paul had many interests including scouting, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Arab Shrine, wood working, flying, volunteering, mentoring, and church activities. He loved golf, ice hockey, handball and especially skiing. He and Cj enjoyed their condo in Colorado where Paul skied until he was 79. They created a close-knit family and you could always find them at their children's/grandchildren's activities. They gave generously to a wide array of organizations that reflected their life-long commitments. Paul had a wonderful sense of humor and a smirk that melted hearts. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and Cj, who passed away last August.
He is survived by sons Gerry (Candy) of Valley City, ND, David (Valerie) of Topeka, daughter Christa (Kem) Sloop of Topeka, grandchildren Jonathan (Anne) Huss, Christopher (Stephanie) Huss, Breton Sloop, Adam (Iris) Huss, Kaitlyn Huss, great grandchildren Keegan, Peyton, and Orion Huss, Michael Huss-Reeves, and Cammie Huss who is expected later this month.
The family gives special thanks to the Brewster Health Center caretakers who cared for and loved him.
