Patrick "Pat" Russell was born July 26, 1943 in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the son of Edward James Russell, Sr. and Thelma L. Milton Russell. Pat lived in Chickasha, Oklahoma until 1956 when he moved with his parents to El Dorado, Kansas..
In 1964, while a student at Wichita State University, he sustained a spinal cord injury which forever changed his life. For the next 39 years, Pat met that challenge with courage. His love, humor and resilience of spirit knew no bounds.
Later returning to college, he graduated with a BS in accounting from Wichita State University; a Masters in Business Education from Emporia State University; and a Juris Doctorate from Washburn University School of Law.
For over 20 years Pat was employed by the State of Kansas. He touched many lives during that time and was fortunate to have made many friends. In recent years, he enjoyed his weekly dinner companions at McFarland's Restaurant.
He had served as a member of the Board of Shawnee Community Mental Health Center.
Pat was preceded in death by his father, Edward James Russell, Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Thelma Russell of El Dorado, Kansas; his brother, Edward James Russell, Jr. of Oklahoma City Okla.; his beloved daughter and the light of his life, Erin Elizabeth Russell Taylor and her husband, Frankie Lee Taylor of Topeka; his grandson , Matthew Patrick Russell and granddaughter, Karen Rain Taylor; his former wife and dear friend, Cathy Baer; his friend, Sherry Baer; his niece, Faith Anne Hartenberger; his nephew, Mark Samuel Hartenburger; his great-nephews, Gavin Sky Ward and Ethan Samuel Hartenberger; personal attendants and close friends, Larry McDowell and Mike Sheddan and many additional friends and family.
Pat will lie in state beginning at 4:00pm. The visitation will be from 6 to 8 Monday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Services will be at 11 am Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Graveside services will follow at Penwell-Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery.
