O'Thene Leonard

O'Thene Leonard passed away peacefully on December 31, 2010, after a sudden illness. She was 91 years old and cherished life, focusing her great energy and love on family and friends. O'Thene was pre-deceased in 2006 by her husband of 63 years, Wilbur Leonard. O'Thene and Wilbur are survived by their daughters, Nancy Dietze, Lawrence, Kansas; Jodi Kaigh, Casper, Wyoming; and Gayle Harper, Edmonton, Alberta; grandchildren, Lawrence (Julie) Dietze, Lawrence, Kansas; Rhiannon (Ben) Harris, Manhattan, Kansas; Connor Harper (Jennifer Gross); Cody Harper; Charlotte Harper, Edmonton, Alberta; and great-granddaughter, Sophia Dietze. O'Thene is also survived by her sister-in-law Jean Leonard, Portland, Oregon.

O'Thene was born in Mulvane, Kansas, to Arthur and Adeline Huff. She attended the University of Kansas, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She continued to enjoy KU athletics and alumna activities for the rest of her life. She took an active part in community activities such as Head Start, Doorstep, and the YWCA, where she served as Chairman of the building committee. She was an active member of Central Congregational Church for over 50 years and also served on the Board of Trustees of Mount Hope Cemetery. She was an active member of the P.E.O. Chapter EP.

O'Thene and Wilbur were residents of Potwin Place for 44 years where they were part of many neighborhood events and formed lasting friendships. O'Thene moved to Brewster Place in 2004. She loved living there and made it her home, volunteering at the Health Center and taking part in many activities.

As was her wish, O'Thene was cremated. A memorial ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 8, 2011, at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. After the service friends and family are invited to gather and share memories at the lower level of the Brewster Place Main Building, 1205 SW 29th Street, Topeka, Kansas. Private family entombment will be at Mt. Hope Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the YWCA or to the Brewster Place Benevolent Fund.
