Oral J. "Jess" Roark, 84, Topeka, passed away Friday, January 1. 2010.
Jess was born May 28, 1925 in Holdenville, Hughes County, Oklahoma, the son of Frank and Bessie (Davidson) Roark. He moved to Gypsum in 1930. He lived in Gypsum for 11 years before joining the Navy at the age of 17 when World War II broke out. He served in the Armed Forces for 23 years, participated in three wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He spent 13 years in foreign countries from Europe to Asia, Africa and Central America. After retiring from the military, he worked at an ice plant in Topeka and later for A-Z Rental and was self employed in small engine repair.
He enjoyed woodworking and fishing with his son.
Jess married Toshiko Amiya in 1963 in Japan. She survives. Other survivors include son, Brendon (Brooke) Roark, Topeka; and grandsons, Nicholas, William, Haden and Maximillian. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Carl and Roy.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13,2010 at Brewster Place Chapel. Refreshments to follow. Private family inurnment will be in Gypsum Cemetery.
