Ophir "Mama" Jones, 91, Topeka, passed away on July 4, 2008, at Plaza West Regional Health Center.
She was born on Oct. 4, 1916, in Brinkley, AR, the daughter of Eugene and Novella (Jackson) Alexander.
Ophir spent many years working with the under privileged and also served with the neighborhood improvement association. She was a past member of St. Mark AME Church and a current member of Gethsemane Church of God and Christ.
Survivors include her children: Othel H. Jones of Topeka; Aaron M. Jones and his wife, Patricia of Murphysboro, TN; Darlene Hayes of Los Angeles, CA; brother: Elijah Alexander of Topeka; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren and numerous children who thought of her as "Mama".
She was preceded in death by four sons, Orie "Vernard"; Fred L.; Frankie "Billy" and Alexander G. Jones.
Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 15 at First Church of God in Christ. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Residence Council c/o Plaza West Regional Health Center, 1570 SW Westport Dr., Topeka, KS 66604.
