Norman R. "Dick" King, 86, of Topeka, passed away August 11, 2014, at Brewster Place.
He was born June 25, 1928, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the son of Army Captain Norman D. and Stella Clark King. He spent his youth there and in Casper, Wyoming, and Alliance, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school.
Dick served in the Army from 1950-52 during the Korean Conflict, including nine months in Korea as an infantry rifleman in the 5th Regimental Combat Team. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.
On June 16, 1957, in Manhattan, he married Charlotte Berkihiser. She survives.
Dick retired from the Topeka Capital Journal in 1993, as the assistant executive editor after 36 years as a reporter and editor in the newsroom. After retirement, he wrote the question-and-answer column in the Sunday paper until 2008.
Dick was a life-time member of Billard Post No. 1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion, member of the Orient Lodge No. 51 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Arab Shrine, and Elks Lodge No. 204.
Other survivors include a daughter, Kathryn "Kathy" King of St. Louis; sister, Lyndall Cornette of Yankton, South Dakota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. King was cremated. At his request, no formal services will be held. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospitals Travel Fund c/o Arab Shriners, 1305 South Kansas Avenue, Topeka, KS 66612-1332 or Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st Street, Topeka, KS 66604.
