Norine Howard Johnson, 95, Topeka, died Sunday, May 21, 2006 at her home.
Norine was born in Calhoun, Missouri on July 4, 1910, the daughter of Noah T. and Lena Depew Howard.
She moved with her family to Kansas in 1917. After short residences in Syracuse and Salina, the family settled in McPherson. She graduated from McPherson High School in 1928 and attended McPherson College and Kansas University. She taught four years at Old Belvoir Rural School in Douglas County, Kansas.
She was married in Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence, Kansas on April 22, 1934 to Marvin E. Johnson of McPherson. They lived for 13 years in Wichita where Mr. Johnson was employed by the Federal Department of Agriculture. Their 3 children were born in Wichita. In 1947 a transfer brought the family to Topeka.
She grew up in First Presbyterian Church in McPherson, was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wichita and a member of First Lutheran Church in Topeka since 1947. She served many years as a Sunday School teacher and was an active member of Lutheran Church Women. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, served as a Cub Den Mother, and was active in the Boy Scout Mother's Club. She was a member of the Gold Medal Club at Kansas University and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. In 1982, she and her husband moved to Aldersgate Village where she was an active resident over the years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, two sisters and a brother. Survivors include a daughter; Ann Johnson Havenhill and husband, Dr. Marshall Havenhill, Emporia, sons; Dr. Howard M. Johnson and wife, Judy, Bellevue, WA, Dr. Carl J. Johnson and wife, Margot, Gibsonia, PA; 8 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren,12 great grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 2006 at First Lutheran Church with visitation to follow. Private family inurnment will be held at Pewell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
