Nickey D. Martinez, 96, Topeka, passed away Friday, February 19, 2016.
She was born December 6, 1919, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Camillo and Marcaria (Galindo) Dominguez.
She was a homemaker and volunteered with many organizations in Topeka. She received Volunteer of the Year Award from the State of Kansas as President of the Laubach Literacy Council of Topeka. Her honor was recorded on a plaque that is displayed in Washington, D.C. She also held a seat on the Mayor's Task Force for literacy in Topeka. She was a founding member of Mother-to-Mother Chapter of Topeka. She was an officer for the International Center of Washburn University. She volunteered for Parental Stress Hotline. Mrs. Martinez was a lifetime member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where she also served as Secretary for the Alter Society. She was also a member of Church Women United and a Lady of the Knights of Columbus, Chapter #2608.
Nickey married Anthony Ruiz Martinez on September 28, 1941 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on September 25, 2002. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Anthony, Jr. and Edward and two sisters, Lupe & Trini.
Survivors include her children, Barbara Jordan, Patricia Ashburn, Diana Smith, Dr. Adele Kestner and Patrick Martinez and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 201 NE Chandler, Topeka. Interment will be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery. A rosary service will be at 6:00 pm on Tuesday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m.
