Nellie Mae White, 97, Topeka, formerly of Hays and Salem, passed away on March 21, 2006 at Clare Bridge Memory Care Facility where she resided and was lovingly cared for since 2001.
Nellie was born on January 4, 1909 in Major County, OK, the daughter of William and Kittie Cunningham Slater. She had 5 sisters and 2 brothers.
She married John F. White in 1928. The first 30 years of their marriage were spent farming in the Salem Community, Jewell County. The next 30 years were spent in Hays. In Hays, Nellie worked at Hadley Memorial Hospital and was active with the United Methodist Church. Nellie was known for her many beautiful quilts, a hobby she treasured until she was 91 years old.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991, 4 sisters and 2 brothers.
Nellie is survived by her daughter; Kitty L. Stones, Topeka, 3 grandchildren; Charles Stones, Topeka, Richard Stones, Lenexa and Janie Gray, Gales Ferry, CT; 5 great-grandchildren, Alicia, Rick, Steven, Erica and Hannah Stones; and 1 sister, Theona White, Bellflower, CA.
Nellie will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel from 12:00, noon to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, March 24, 2006. A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Mt. Allen Cemetery in Hays. Hays Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements in Hays.
