Naomi Ruth Nibbelink

Naomi Ruth Nibbelink, 93, Topeka, passed away Monday, December 8, 2014 at Midland Hospice.

Naomi was born March 5, 1921 in Atchison, the daughter of Edward and Margaret (Peterson) Nieman. She graduated from Nortonville High School and Saint Luke's School of Nursing in Kansas City. She received her Master's degree in Education from Kansas State University.

Naomi started her nursing career as a Navy nurse in San Diego. She then worked as a registered nurse in Whittier, CA until 1959 when she moved back to Kansas. She was employed as a nurse with Stormont-Vail Hospital for over 30 years, retiring in 1984.

She volunteered for many organizations including Stormont-Vail, Kansas Historical Museum, Topeka Zoo, and Topeka public schools.

She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of the L.W.M.L.. She was active in professional organizations including Kansas Nursing Association and Zonta International.

Naomi married James Emery Gubanyi on September 21, 1943 in California. He died in 1962. She married Lowell K. Nibbelink on July 15, 1967 in Topeka. He died in 1973. Survivors include son, Joe (Heidi) Gubanyi, Seward, NE; daughters through marriage, Barb (Gary) Scott, Wichita, Marcia (Harold) Clark, St. Charles, MO; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Elaine Saffels, Topeka, Lois Lewellyn, Lawrence, and Doris Sloup, Hutchinson. She was preceded in death by a son, James Gubanyi; and brother, Edward Nieman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 12, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Naomi will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday and visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
