Nancy Joyce Michener was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She left this world suddenly on September 13, 2024 at the age of 84.
Nancy was the example of kindness, compassion, beauty, and an undeniable love of family and friends. She approached everything in her life with strength and grace. She was encouraging and supportive and a bit argumentative. A life-long Topeka resident, she had a passionate spirit for Topeka and KU.
She was born on February 29, 1940 and adopted by R.B. “Steve” and Nina Stevenson of Topeka. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1958 and from The University of Kansas, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
After graduating from college, she married Jim Greenwood, and they had two sons, Jeff and Mark. She was a fabulous mother and role model—experiencing unwavering pride and love that only a mother can know. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren and viewed them as true blessings in her life.
She retired from a 25-year career at KTWU, where she worked as assistant director.
Nancy married Bill Michener in 2001 and was married to him at her death. Her final years were filled with his bountiful love and companionship, as well the devotion of his wonderful family, who lovingly embraced her as their own.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church.
Nancy loved art, music, skiing, sewing, walking with her neighborhood friends, entertaining, and traveling the world. She even had her private pilot’s license…she was adventurous.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; sons, Jeff (Kathy) of St. Louis, Missouri and Mark (Tracy) of Nashville, Tennessee; grandsons, Ryan (Katie), Ian, Sean, and Jon; great grandchildren, Jaxon and Jostyn; and countless friends.
Visitation will be Friday, September 20th at 1 pm at the Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins, Topeka, KS 66604 with Tobias Schlingensiepen, officiating. The funeral will follow at 2 pm.
