Nadine Tice

Nadine Tice, 85, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at a Topeka hospital. She was born on February 22, 1924 in Ozawkie, the daughter of Edward and Jessie (England) Schuster. She graduated from Lake Stevens High School, Lake Stevens, WA in 1943. Nadine was employed as a "Rosie The Riveter" during WWII. Her family returned to Kansas in 1945 after the war. She worked at the Kansas Unemployment Service for a few years and then at the Menninger Foundation from 1953 to 1974 as a PBX Operator and Receptionist in Psychotherapy Services. Nadine was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church, the National Guard Officer's Wives Club, and the MOAA Association. She loved to cook, entertain, garden, read, play Canasta, discuss current events and socialize with her family and many friends. Nadine married William Lowell Coleman who was from Lebanon, MO on May 2, 1946. He preceded her in death on October 9, 1964. Nadine married Ret. Major General (Adjutant General) Ralph Taylor Tice on September 16, 1967 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on October 5, 1994. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Carl Schuster and one sister, Mary Ellen Erdmans. Survivors include two daughters, Donna (John) Campbell of Topeka, Paula (Kevin) Chaffee of Phoenix, AZ, one step-daughter, Pam Cook of Topeka, five grandchildren, Marci Schreiner, Matthew Chaffee and William Chaffee, Jennifer Bernasek, Lance Cook, two step-grandchildren, John Campbell, III, Darbi Campbell, fifteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Don Schuster of Ramona, CA and four sisters, Phyllis Jones of Spokane, WA, Lola Maxine Priest of Whiting, KS, Leah Robinson of Killeen, TX and Bertie Lou Johnson of Topeka. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Countryside United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Nadine will lie in state from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. She will later lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Countryside United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 SW Burlingame Rd., Topeka, KS 66611 or to the Museum of the Kansas National Guard, P.O. Box 19285, Topeka, KS 66619.
