Nadine Patricia "Nanadine" Barnhill, 82, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Homestead Assisted Living with her children at her side.
Nadine was born September 12, 1938 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Ettore Manieri and Rose Marie Caccavale. Nadine attended Upper Darby High School in Philadelphia, and received a Bachelor degree from Washburn University, and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Kansas.
Nadine spent an entire lifetime dedicating herself to the selfless service of others and was professionally employed as a licensed social worker at Family Service and Guidance Center in Topeka. Her clinical focus was individual therapy with children, adults and families. She also specialized in the treatment of adolescent age girls in recovery from sexual abuse.
Her post-graduate studies were solely focused on the treatment of abused children. She served on group treatment therapy sessions and the Pre-School Day Treatment Program at the Menninger Foundation. She dedicated endless hours volunteering for community foundations such as Capper Foundation, Washburn University, Jackson High School, United Way, Salvation Army, Topeka U.S.D., Topeka State Hospital Adolescent Unit, Battered Women's Task Force, Friendly Visitors of Topeka, Johnson County Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse, YMCA, Overland Park Jaycee Jaynes, and Cub Scouts of America.
Nadine was a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Kansas Association of Social Workers, devout member of Faith Lutheran Church, and a passionate political supporter and activist.
Those who knew or met Nadine instantly perceived her warmth and caring nature. She was of full Italian descent, which explained her love of food and family. She was a breast cancer survivor, dedicated mother, caring and engaging neighbor, devoted wife, and inspirational grandmother. She was passionate about people, especially children, and had a lifelong interest in plants, flowers, birds, along with a long lineage of four-legged friends. She loved music, PT's Coffee, walking her dogs, painting, collecting artwork, supporting local artists, driving her Mini Cooper (with dogs in tow), collecting elephant statues, engaging in politics, and fighting for women's rights. She was as strong in the end as she was in the beginning and will be missed by so many of us.
Survivors include her children Mark W. Lauterbach (Susan), Lisa M. Harrelson, Eric A. Lauterbach, Jason W. Barnhill (Stephanie), Alan W. Barnhill; grandchildren, Marilyn Lauterbach, John Harrelson, Nicholas Lauterbach, Ian Lauterbach and Anna Lauterbach; great grandsons Bodi Harrelson and Camden Harrelson; sister Donna Manieri-Medford; stepbrother Laird Kelly.
