Myrle Margaret Hersh Drake
Myrle Drake, 96, of Topeka, passed away, Sunday, September 25, 2005, at Topeka Presbyterian Manor.
She was born June 27, 1909 in Fulton County, Ipava, Illinois the daughter of Elmer M. and Estella Huff Thomas of Emporia, Kansas. She moved to Kansas with her parents in 1917.
Myrle was a graduate of Emporia High School and Emporia Business College. She was employed by the General Mills Company and Poehler Mercantile Company at Emporia ten years.
She moved to Topeka in 1942. She was employed by the Hussey & Hussey General Agency and Trinity Universal Insurance Company as Bookkeeper for 32 ½ years until her retirement in 1975.
She was appointed Grand Secretary of the Grand Chapter of Kansas order of Eastern Star on December 31, 1977 and was elected to the office each year until she retired May 29, 1989.
She was a member and past Worthy Matron of Topeka Chapter #462 Order of the Eastern Star, 50 year member and Past Worthy High Priestess of Trinity Shrine #7, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem and a 50 year member and Past Lady Superior of Topeka Council #1, Ancient Toltec Rite. Myrle was also a member of Assembly #24 Social Order of the Beauceant, Past Matrons and Patrons of Topeka Chapter #462 Association, District #14, Subordinate Secretaries of Kansas and the General Grand Chapter Association of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was honored with the appointment of "Grand Secretary Emerita" in 1996.
She was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church.
Myrle was united in marriage to Clifford M. Hersh December 27, 1941 in Topeka. He preceded her in death June 6, 1963. She later married Maurice L. Drake, Sr., May 15, 1966 in Topeka. He preceded her in death February 19, 1984.
Survivors include two step daughters, Mrs. Barbara Hersh Thrasher, Topeka; Mrs Charlotte Hersh Crane, Olathe, KS; five nieces and nephews, twenty two great nieces and nephews, and several great great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at the Jellison Chapel at Topeka Presbyterian Manor. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. In lieu of flowers contributions may be given to ESTRAL of the Grand Chapter of Kansas, Order of the Eastern Star, 1109 S. Topeka Blvd, Topeka, Kansas 66612.
