Murrell Wright

Murrell W. Wright, 84 passed away quietly June 10, 2009 with many of his family present at his side. He was born April 2, 1925 in Maple Hill, KS, one of 5 children of William and Doshie Morton Wright.

Murrell graduated from Maple Hill High School in 1942. Murrell married Zelda Marie Moran in 1944 in Topeka, KS. He served in the U.S. Army toward the end of World War II in Luzon, Philippines and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. His work career included farming, operating a service station, part-time carpenter, and he retired as a blacksmith for the Santa Fe Railroad. He was a handy-man around the house and could fix anything.

Murrell was a member of both the Dover Masonic Lodge #138 and Dover American Legion for over 50 years. As an active member of the Dover Community, Murrell served on the Dover Grade School Board, the Dover Rural Water District, and was a member of the Dover Federated Church. He coached little league baseball and regularly cheered on his sons, grandkids and great-grandkids at their ballgames. After retirement Murrell led a busy and full life on their farm, spending time with family, and putting his welding skills into creating hundreds of steel caricatures of little men doing all of the chores of life along with dozens of wooden toys. He was a great husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa and will be missed greatly by his family.

Murrell is survived by his wife of 64 years, Zelda, 3 sons, Jerry (wife Beverly) of Grove, OK, Ron (wife Renae) near Auburn, KS, and Galen (wife Rondi) of Olympia, WA, 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Murrell was preceded in death by brothers, Floyd and Earl, and his sister, Elsie Wright Miller. One brother, Eldon, resides in Banning, CA.

Murrell will lie in state from 3:00-9:00 p.m. Monday, June 15 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Dover Federated Church followed by burial at the Dover Cemetery. Masonic graveside service provided by Dover Masonic Lodge #138 with Ft.
