MILDRED LUMMIS CANFIELD
Mildred Lummis was born in Bladworth, Saskatchewan, Canada 21 May 1913 to Cyrus and Mame Griffith Lummis. At the age of four, following the death of her mother, Mildred was sent with two brothers to live with, and was raised by relatives, Mr. And Mrs. Silas Bartleson, in rural Mitchell County, Kansas. She later became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Mildred graduated from Beloit High School, Mitchell County, Kansas. After graduating from high school, Mildred was employed as a traveling music teacher in rural Mitchell and Lincoln Counties for eight years.
Mildred Lummis married Earl C. Canfield at the Methodist Church in Hebron, Nebraska on 26 August 1939. Both Earl and Mildred operated a jewelry store, Earl later was employed as a high school teacher in the Beloit School District and Mildred taught private piano lessons until they moved to Topeka, Kansas in
1967. Mildred Canfield lived in Wichita, Kansas for three years while her husband served in the South Pacific during World War Il; where she worked at the Boeing aircraft factory.
Mildred Canfield received a Bachelor of Music Education, Minor in piano, from Washburn University; Topeka, Kansas in 1970. Mildred Canfield taught music in the Rossville, Kansas, school district for eleven years. Mildred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Topeka. Mildred Canfield resided at Aldersgate Village Methodist Home until the time of her death.
Mildred Canfield is survived by a son, Bruce "Kip" Canfield and daughter-in-law Karla Christensen Canfield of Las Vegas, NV, and four grandchildren: Shelly Marie Schroeder of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, Sean Michael Predith of Overland Park, Kansas, Kristen Marie Canfield and James Gregory Canfield of Reno, Nevada.
Husband Earl C. Canfield, brothers Alan and Harold Lummis, Cyrus Lummis of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Wesley Lummis of Beloit, Kansas, and daughter Dale Marie Canfield Predith of Topeka, Kansas preceded Mildred Canfield in death.
Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Topeka, Kansas at 1:00 PM on Monday, 1 March 2004 with internment following at Mt. Hope Cemetery.Mrs. Canfield will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town chapel from noon Sunday until service time and the family will receive friends and relatives from2:00PM-4:00PM Sunday at the funeral home.
