Mildred Bailey

January 14, 1935 — February 21, 2017

Mildred "Millie" Bailey, 82, of Topeka, passed away on February 21, 2017.

She was born in Enid, OK on January 14, 1935, the daughter of Bud and Zig Champney. The family traveled, and lived in many places during her father's career.
Her family settled in Topeka in 1951, where Millie met Ollie Bailey Jr. The two were married on April 18, 1953.

She had their first son Richard "Rick" Bailey on November 7, 1954. She gave birth to their second son, David "Brad" Bailey, on February 7, 1956. The family lived in El Paso, TX, and in South Carolina during Ollie's service with the United States Army.

Millie was very active, and was one of the better bowlers in the Topeka area. She founded the Wheat State Bowling Tournament, which she ran for several years with her good friend, Virginia Wood. She worked for over 20 years for Shawnee Federal Savings in Topeka as Vice President and Branch Manager in North Topeka. She finished her career with over 10 years at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas in the purchasing department.

Millie enjoyed many hobbies and crafts. She was the type of crafter that went all out. When she started ceramics, she bought a kiln and the molds and had a house full of ceramics for all seasons. She had the greatest Halloween items and just about every imaginable Christmas tree. She created full towns of Christmas spirit and beautiful cross-stitch pictures, as well as baby blankets for all of her great-grandchildren. You name it, and she did it or collected it.

She enjoyed watching her grandchildren do anything, and would go anywhere to do it.
Millie loved spending time with her loving husband, Jr. When KU played baseball against Nebraska in Lincoln, the crowd was filled with Cornhuskers in Red, with the exception of a couple of Jayhawks right in the middle: Millie and Junior. They also enjoyed gambling together all over the country. Just about anywhere Millie and Jr. went together; they were always able to find a place to gamble.

She is survived by her husband, Jr., of Topeka; sons, Rick (Jane) Bailey, of Lawrence, KS, and Brad (Rita) Bailey of Topeka; a brother, Bud (Candy) Champney, of Topeka; grandchildren, Ryan (Shannon), Derek (Jackie), Tyler, Cole, and Matt; and great-grandchildren, Andrew, Emma, Ollie, and Britton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Marian Lancaster.

A memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2017 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

Inurnment will follow in the Topeka Cemetery.
