Michael Slavin, 70, Topeka, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017.
He was born August 17, 1946, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of I.T. Slavin and Mary Frances (Murphy).
He graduated from Dowling High School, Des Moines, IA in 1965 and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
Michael was employed by Hein & Stremming and later retired from Spencer's Men's Clothing Store.
He played baseball in high school. He also played semi-pro baseball, and was an ardent fan of baseball and basketball throughout his life.
Michael volunteered over 2,000 hours at the Department of Veterans Affairs helping his fellow veterans document their stories.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carol; three daughters, Denise (Lane) Gray; Keirston (Bruce) Williamson and Jo Musick, all of Topeka; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Sally Rasmussen and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Memorial services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, where the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Military honors will follow at Lake Shawnee Ted Ensley Memorial Garden Pergola.
Memorial contributions may be made to Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center, to assist veterans with the effects of Agent Orange or PTSD or American Cancer Society c/o the funeral home, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66604.
