Michael Stephen Scanland, 87, of Kansas City, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020.
He was born November 15, 1932, in Holton, Kansas, the son of Perry and Dorothy Scanland. He received a Bachelor's Degree in English from Kansas State University. He was drafted and served in Germany for the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He worked as a mason tender/brick layer in construction while yet being a member under the 1290 Laborers Union. Today he carries his 50 plus years for the Laborers Union recognitions as a member. Yet while also being a member, he was voted in as President in his Union Hall for a number of years as a dedicated union hall supporter.
He had a passion for all sports; among his favorite was K-State Football as his family/relatives have been long time season ticket holders to all games. He was a history bookworm. In his home, he had numerous full bookshelves. He always liked to dive right into a war book, and loved a great atlas of the world.
In his younger years, he was a fighter in the bantam/light weight divisions and he would box in both Topeka and Kansas City. He did win some tournaments in the Golden Gloves.
