Michael Britenham Ecord, 72, of Topeka, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at Midland Hospice. Mike's final days were surrounded by loving family and friends.
He was born on April 26, 1949 in Topeka, KS, to Jack and Ilene (Jones) Ecord. He was a member of the Topeka West High School class of 1967. Mike graduated in 1973 with a degree in Architecture from the University of Kansas where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He worked in the field of architecture until his retirement in 2004. One of the highlights of his career was designing and building his parents' Lake Sherwood home in 1978 where the family created lots of memories spending time together on the lake.
Mike was a loyal KU fan who loved going to basketball games and enjoyed watching the NCAA tournament each year. He also enjoyed attending Washburn University basketball games and was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs.
He loved cars. He was a racing fan and enjoyed watching the World of Outlaws and NASCAR races. Mike had an appreciation for antique vehicles and spent his final years proudly showing off his 1970 Corvette at local car shows. He also enjoyed going to the Mecum auto auction and watching it on television.
Mike was a devoted pet parent to many dogs and a cat throughout the years. He enjoyed having an animal companion to spend time with.
The thing Mike was most passionate about was Poker Club. He was blessed to have a close group of friends, many from childhood, who gathered to play poker on a regular basis. Mike loved hosting Poker Club at his home and enjoyed the card playing and camaraderie.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sisters: Kathi (Rex) Haney and Jackie Ecord, his stepdaughter Sarah (Wil) Dunekack, nephews and nieces: Britt (Amy) Haney, Heather Elliott, Bernie (Kristin) Haney, Lindsey (Nick) Vaughn, Joshua (Tara) Elliott, six great nieces, one great nephew, seven first cousins and some very special friends.
Funeral Service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 2, 2021 at First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins Ave., Topeka, KS 66604. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service at the church.
