Michael L. Ballard, 77, Topeka, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Midland Hospice House.
Mike was born February 21, 1939 in Topeka, the son of LuRoy and Mary Jane (Brown) Ballard. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1957, received his Bachelor's degree from Missouri Valley College in 1963 and a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee in 1965.
He worked professionally and volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America for 69 years and was Director of Social Services for the Salvation Army in Topeka for 12 years, retiring in 2002.
He was a member of Standing Bear Intertribal Drum and served on the board of Community Action in Topeka and a past-president of the Mdewankanton organization in Mankato, MN.
Mike married Conchita "Connie" Bowman on February 20, 1965 in Marshall, MO. His wife of 51 years survives. Other survivors include daughter, Sarah Riemann, New Ulm, MN; son, Roy Ballard, Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Alicia, Matt, Cheyenne, Riley, Quinn; and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Brooke.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2016 at Mount Hope Cemetery and Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
