Merlin F. Ice, 83, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016. He was born April 23, 1933 in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of Fred D. and Ella G. (McCaig) Ice. Walter and Pauline Stogsdill were his foster parents.
Merlin graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1951. He was an Army Veteran during the Korean War. Merlin was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for 37 years before retiring in 1992. He was a member of Auburn Presbyterian Church. He was also an avid bowler including the Gage Gents League at Gage Bowl and the Knights of Columbus League at West Ridge Lanes. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and coaching.
Merlin married Joyce Bauman on September 18, 1955 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include three children, Carl and his wife, Mary Ice of Westlake, Texas, Keith and his wife, Nancy Ice of Overland Park, Kansas, Terri and her husband, Charlie Long of Auburn, six grandchildren, Marshall and his wife, Megan Ice, Karen Ice, Jamie and her husband, Ryan Perkins, Kyle Ice, Kristen and her husband Joe Anderson and Kathryn Long. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Jake and Evan Perkins and Jadzia and Sydney Anderson. In addition, several nieces and nephews survive.
Merlin was preceded in death by his sister, Vi Swafford in August, 2015.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Merlin will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at the funeral home.
