Melvyn Dean Harbour passed away December 2, 2022, in Overland Park. He was 90 years old.
He is preceded in death by his brother Larry and wife, Edna Ruth.
Melvyn is survived by a sister Rosalee Ingalls; two sons, Kenton and Derrick; each of their spouses, who are both named Julie; and four grandchildren, Austen, Brandon, Luke, and Joel.
Melvyn was born in Emporia, Kansas. His most cherished memories are of the days he spent playing and working on the farm. Conversations about old tractors, horses, farm work, western movies, or fishing would always bring a smile to his face and another story to share.
Melvyn was very proud of his veteran service. In 1951 Melvyn joined the Air Force and served honorably in the Korean War.
After his military service he joined a wheat harvesting crew and met the love of his life, Edna Ruth, at a farm where that crew was working one summer.
They lived out their lives in Topeka. She was a teacher and he also worked for the school system as a welder in building maintenance.
Melvyn is remembered as a man with an endearing absent mindedness, a man with a generous heart, who loved conversation and a good laugh or story, and whose favorite outfit was pair of bib overalls. He also loved the Lord Jesus Christ, the scripture, and regarded his salvation as a precious gift of grace.
Those that knew Melvyn may greet the family at a drop-in viewing 10 to noon December 10 at the Penwell-Gabel funeral home in Topeka. The service following will be a small, private event for family only.
Gifts of charity in lieu of flowers are preferred and those may be shared with the Topeka First Church of the Nazarene or with the Alzheimer's Association.
