Melvin Eugene Middendorf, 87, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021.
He was born April 14, 1933, in Hiawatha, Kansas, the son of Emil E. and Freida L. (Puvogel) Middendorf.
Melvin graduated from Fairview High School in 1951. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1956 during the Korean War.
Melvin worked as a laborer for Beatrice Foods as well as for the VA Hospital prior to retiring.
He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Topeka and served on the Senate for The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod – Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and Saint Paul Lutheran Church.
Melvin married Marlene C. Faber on July 18, 1964 in Hasting, Nebraska. She preceded him in death on December 29, 2007.
Survivors include his children, Laurie (Andy) Pfister of Lawton, OK, Terry (Laurie) Middendorf Meriden, KS and Melissa Middendorf of Topeka; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Norma Barnett, Betty Underwood and Shirley Faulwell all of Overland Park, KS, Delores Lehmkuhl of Holton, KS and a very close family friend Gary Doucette of Topeka.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his children, Karman Hoppens and Rosemarie Doucette; five siblings, Harlan and Walter Middendorf, Dorothy Wien, Ruth McDaniel, Wilma White and two grandchildren, Keith Doucette and Sarah Middendorf.
Melvin's faith was of great importance. He enjoyed participating in his grandchildren's activities. He loved K-State, Chiefs, Royals and Washburn sports. He enjoyed playing cards, putting together puzzles and spending time with his family and friends.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals and Receptions Mid-Town Chapel.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals and Receptions Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604.
Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 3616 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, KS 66606.
Due to Covid-19 concerns social distancing and masks are required.
