Melva Jean Tucker

Melva "Jean" Tucker passed away on March 8, 2003, at Aldersgate Village after an extended illness. She was born on January 12, 1925, in Smith Center, Kansas to William and Elsie Pierce. Her mother died shortly after her birth and at the age of 10 days, she was adopted by John and Ada McCarty who were neighbors of the family.

Jean graduated from Smith Center High School in 1942 and began nurse's training at the Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Topeka. During nurse's training, she was a member of the Navy Nurse Corps. She later earned a Bachelors Degree in Health Care Administration from Ottawa University.
Prior to moving to Topeka, she lived in Lawrence, KS with her family while her husband completed his degree at Kansas University.

She worked for the state of Kansas for 10 years, evaluating hospitals and skilled nursing homes for relicensure. In 1974, she moved to the Kansas City area to work for the Federal Government as a special agent for the Department of Investigation, evaluating claims of medicare and medicaid fraud. She retired in 1988, and lived in Overland Park until returning to Topeka in 1997. She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Topeka.

She was married to Rex J. Tucker in 1945. They were divorced in 1970. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Pricilla Tucker, of Manhattan, KS.

Survivors include her daughter Leslie Tucker Jenison and her husband, Timothy of San Antonio, TX; son-in-law Lindsay Smith of Manhattan, KS; 4 Granddaughters: Lauren, Natalie, and Claire Jenison of San Antonio, TX; Oona Hunter Garcia of Albuquerque, NM;
and 4 Great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted in the community room of Health Unit West at Aldersgate Village on Tuesday, March 11,2003 at 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Patient's Fund at Aldersgate Village, 7220 SW Asbury Dr. Topeka, KS 66614 ; or The Capper Foundation, 3500 SW 10th, Topeka, KS 66604 ; or Midland Hospice Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606-2800.
