Melinda Kay Hickerson

Melinda Kay Martin Hickerson, 56, of Lawrence, formerly of Topeka, passed away, Wednesday, December 14, 2005.

Melinda was born September 26, 1949 in Enid, Oklahoma the daughter of Col. W.D. "Pete" and Virginia "Peggy" Shepherd Martin. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Washburn University, Topeka, then received her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and her Master of Science in Administrative and Health Care Management from Kansas State University.


Melinda served as the Director of Dietetics in facilities in both Arkansas and Kansas. She served as director of Food and Nutrition Services at Lawrence Memorial Hospital from 1990-2004 and most recently had worked as Assistant Director of Clinical Care at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.

She was a member and President of the Kansas Dietetic Association. Melinda was also a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She was the author of several published articles in newsletters and professional journals.

She was married to Will Hickerson. They later divorced. Survivors include her daughter, Hayley Hickerson Violand and her husband David, Hawaii; her grandson, Jackson Martin Violand; her mother, Peggy Martin, Topeka; her sister, Donna Kahle, Osage City, KS; her brother, Brett Martin, Washington, D.C.; her nephews, Christopher Kahle and his wife Erin, Seattle, WA, and Todd Kahle and his fiancée, Mallory Bishop both of Emporia, KS. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins of both the Martin and Shepherd families.

Melinda was cremated. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Countryside United Methodist Church. Inurnment services will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 SW Burlingame Road, Topeka, KS 66611 or KDA Foundation Scholarship Program in memory of Melinda Hickerson, 3133 U.
