Medford H. Shively, Ph.D., 89, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2012, in Lawrence.

Medford was born June 13, 1923, in Elwood, IN, to Medford H. Shively, Sr. and Marie (Handel) Shively. He married Juanita E. "Nita" Hansen on November 12, 1949. Medford received a B.S. in Business from Indiana University, School of Business in 1949, his Master of Business Administration from the University of Denver in 1952, and his Doctor of Philosophy from Western Colorado University in 1973. He served in the Army in the 42nd Infantry Division, Cannon Company, 222nd Infantry Regiment. He received the U.S. Bronze Star Medal, among other medals, in WWII and was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and presented with the French Medal of Honor in 2010. Medford taught business at Kansas Wesleyan University for 11 years. He moved to Topeka and began working for the Kansas Corporation Commission and then worked for the Kansas Neurological Institute where he retired in 1989 as Director of Personnel. Medford was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Lawrence, KS, Indiana University Alumni Association, Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity, Indiana Pioneer Association, American Legion Post 400, and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a lover of classical music and was a gifted painter. Medford also loved politics, traveling, gardening, cooking, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years; parents; and brother, Louis.

Medford is survived by his six children; Cathleen Shively, Christine Shively-Benjamin, Barbara Thompson, Cynthia (Joe) Laframboise, Stephen Shively, and Theresa Shively-Porter; two grandchildren, Nigel (Mandy) Thompson and Alex Porter; and great granddaughter, Alexis Thompson.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2012, at Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church, 1114 W 10th Ave. A Parish Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church where the family will greet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A private inurnment will follow the service at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Lawrence, KS.
