MAXINE J. ANTON, Topeka, died Friday, April 25, 2003 at a Topeka retirement center.
She was born in San Augustine, Texas, the daughter of Thomas J. and Lenore Gunning Jeanes. She moved with her family to Houston in 1925, where she attended elementary, high school, and Rice University, where she received a BA Degree in 1929. Mrs. Anton moved to Topeka in 1938.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Topeka. She was very active in community affairs, and in 1957, was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Menninger Foundation. The Anton room in Seely Conference Center is named in recognition of Mrs. Anton's contribution to the work of Menninger. She was a member of the board of directors of: The Villages, Inc.; the advisory committee of the Topeka Community Foundation; and the Friends of Cedar Crest.
She served on the Topeka Fine Arts Board; the Lyric Opera Committee; and the Red Cross Board. In 1967, she was appointed to the Kansas Arts Commission. She is a former member of the first Mulvane Art Board at Washburn University of Topeka.
The Topeka Community Foundation honored Mrs. Anton with its Individual Philanthropist Award in 1993, and in 1996, Washburn University honored her with its Monroe Award. She received the Washburn University President's Award in 1999.
She married Willis A. Anton on June 5, 1943 in Topeka. He died Nov. 10, 1977.

Mrs. Anton will lie in state after noon Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, where visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Private family services will be held.
