Maudene Goebel, 92, Topeka, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. She was born on August 10, 1922 to Edward and Maude Messmer. After her parents died, Maudene was raised by her maternal grandparents, James and Retta Skillen. She grew up in Norwich, and graduated from Norwich High School, then attended Southwestern University where she focused on Theater and English.
She married George Goebel on December 21, 1945 in Wichita, Kansas following his military service in WWII. She later received her teaching degree from Emporia State University and taught English at Boswell Jr. High School in Topeka. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Topeka, where she dedicated a number of years in the establishment and support of the preschool/day care; member of PEO Chapter DN for over 50 years; and enjoyed participating in a number of bridge groups.
Family was always a top priority for her, and she dedicated her life to caring for them. Maudene was preceded in death by her parents; brother Harley; sister-in-law Ruth, and husband George. She is survived by her children, Marti (Bill-deceased) Dittman, Steve (Tammy) Goebel, Gary (Jamie) Goebel, 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 in Klasse Chapel at First United Methodist Church, Topeka. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church.
