Mary Yager

December 25, 1919 — February 27, 2013

Mary Elizabeth Carlat Yager was born on Christmas Day, 1919 in Dover, Kansas, to James and Ethel Carlat. Mr. and Mrs. Carlet owned and operated a family farm.

Mary attended local primary and secondary schools, graduating from Dover Rural High School in 1936 at age 16.

After graduating from Clark's Business School, she worked variously for Southwestern Bell Telephone in Topeka, Kansas, and as a clerk typist for the United States Army at Fort Rosecrans during World War II.

In 1942 Mary met, and eventually married, Marshall L. Yager of Auburn, Kansas, who was serving in the United States Navy.

Married on February 3, 1943, the Yagers moved to San Diego, CA, where they embarked on a 17-year journey as a Navy couple which variously took them to New York, New York; Norfolk, Virginia; Long Beach and San Diego, California; Indian Head, Maryland; Honolulu, Hawaii and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Upon LCDR Yager's retirement from the United States Navy in 1960, the couple moved to Orange, California, where they resided for 30 years. While living in Orange, Mary became active in Boy Scouts of America and the Assistance League of Orange. Mary and "Mike" were members of the First United Methodist Church of Orange with the Reverend Richard V. Kendall. During this period, she was employed as a bookkeeper at the Santa Ana Community Hospital.

In 1982, Mr. and Mrs. retired to Hemet, California. During this period, they enjoyed an active life of family and traveling to various parts of North America and abroad. They particularly enjoyed their summers with their RV friends in Netarts, Oregon; Kalispell, Montana, and other fishing meccas.

While living in Hemet, Mary was active in the Assistance League of Hemet and The Red Hat Club. Mary was also an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Hemet.

Mary passed away on the morning of February 27, 2013, in Hemet, CA. She was 93 years of age.

She is survived by her brother Gary Carlat of Pittsburg, Kansas; three sons, Marshall J. of Beaverton, Oregon; Stephen of Topeka, Kansas; and Gregory of Shanghai, China; daughters-in -law, Cynthia and Mary Yager; eight grand children and eight great grand children.
