Mary V. Martinez, 89, formerly of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at The Groves Residence in Independence, MO.
Mary was born in Beeville, TX on December 3, 1921 and was a survivor of the June 8th, 1966 Topeka Tornado and directly involved in the Physical Plant rebuilding of the Washburn campus.
Mrs. Martinez retired from Washburn University after 23 years of service in 1993. She was known on the Washburn campus for her works in the International House and service to the foreign student program and achievements in humanitarian efforts.
She was married to George T. Martinez on June 4, 1952 at Houston, TX. He preceded her in death on October 11, 1996. Survivors include a son, Mike (Leslie) Martinez, K.C., MO; a granddaughter, Christy Marerro; three grandsons, David Andrew, Derek and three great-grandchildren, Keegan, Carter and Sophia.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Monday, April 4, 2011 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka.
