Mary Catharine "Katie" Strahm, 79, Topeka, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2006 at her residence.
Katie was born October 4, 1926 in Overbrook, the daughter of Mahlon and Mary Turner Little. She began her education in a one room school house in rural Franklin County. Her family moved to Kansas City, Kansas in 1942 and she graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1944.
She received her B.A. from McPherson College and a Master's in Foreign Language from Emporia State Teachers College. Katie taught languages at Sabetha, Oneida, Fairview, Marion and Topeka. She taught at Topeka High School for over 20 years. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Bogota, Colombia. She received the McPherson College Alumni Citation of Merit. After retirement, she continued to teach and tutor until the spring of 2005.
Katie was an active member of the Rochester Community Church of the Brethren since 1959. She was a member of the Topeka Center for Peace & Justice, the Topeka Alliance for Central America, the McPherson Alumni Association, Interfaith of Topeka, the Topeka Area Retired Teachers, the Kansas Retired Teachers, and was an active Volkswalker. She had a lifetime interest in music. Katie was often a piano accompanist at church services, weddings and in nursing homes.
Katie married Leland Strahm on December 26, 1949. He died in 1997. She married Elvin Frantz in 1998. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Mahlon Strahm and his wife, Robbie, Lawrence; 3 grandchildren, Lance Strahm and his wife, Kasey, Overland Park, April Davies, Lawrence and Brooke Riffel and her husband, Brandon, Ottawa; a great grandson, Cooper Strahm, Overland Park; 2 brothers, Ivan Little, Shawnee, and Joe Little, Oklahoma City, OK.; 2 sisters, Dorothy Brandt, Baywood Park, CA., and Sally Cox, Louisville, KY; 3 step-daughters, Mariana Frantz, Kathleen Garrett and Peggy Frantz. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lee Strahm.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at the Rochester Community Church of the Brethren. Inurnment will follow at 2:00 P.M. in the Sabetha Cemetery, Sabetha.
