Mary Lee Smith, 78, Topeka passed away at her home on Friday, March 4, 2005.
She was born January 26, 1927 in Northern Lyon County, Kansas, the daughter of Franklin Thomas and Maud Higgins Shepherd who were long time residents of Lyon County.
Mary attended District 46 Grade School. She graduated from Miller High School in 1945. Upon graduation, Mary and her sister Martha went to Topeka and worked for Hallmark Cards. After the children were raised, she worked in food service at Topeka High School and later returned to work at Hallmark Cards where she retired in 1986.
Mary was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church and an active member in the many activities of the church and her Agape Circle.
She married LaMoyne Smith on December 22, 1947. He survives. Other survivors include a son: Joe Smith and wife Jane ; a daughter Diana McGuire and husband Steven all of Topeka; a sister, Lois Wheat of Strong City; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Gerstner and a brother Franklin Shepherd.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday at Crestview United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Smith will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 P. M. on Sunday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M.
