Mary Louise (Powell) Lagerberg, 83, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2014.
She was born October 10, 1930 in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of C.M. and Eva F.(Smart) Powell. The family moved to Topeka when Mary was quite young. She attended Topeka Public Schools graduating from Topeka High School in 1948.
After graduation, she attended Washburn University where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority in which she stayed active throughout her life.
She went to work for the State of Kansas in 1950. In 1952 she married the love of her life, Jim Lagerberg. They just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. To this marriage three children were born, Cathy in 1954, Cindy and Eric in 1957.
In the late 1970's, after the girls were mostly grown, she went to work for Ray Beers Clothing Co. downtown, eventually becoming the Women's Department Manager when the new store opened at West Ridge Mall in 1988. She retired in 1996 when the store closed that same year.
Mary was a member of West Side Baptist Church and was active throughout her life in several organizations including the Junior League of Topeka, Stormont-Vail Hospital Auxiliary group VIII, The American Business Women's Association, PEO Chapter DV, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Topeka High School Historical Society, The Ambassador's Club for the Topeka Chamber of Commerce, was a founding member of the Lady Luck Investment Club, was a Precinct Committee Woman for the Republican Party and had received her 1500 hour volunteer pin for Stormont-Vail Health Center. One of her most favorite accomplishments was receiving her "250" pin from Gage Bowl.
She is survived by her husband, Jim of the home; two daughters, Cathy (Bruce) Kready Smith, Topeka and Cindy (Steve) Lines Springfield, MO; six grandchildren, Jeff (Nikki) Kready, Jon Kready and Jena (Shawn) Kirby, Erik, Christopher and Matthew Lines; and a great-granddaughter, Lena Kready.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Eric Lagerberg in 1957 and a brother, J.B. Powell.
A funeral ceremony will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 16, 2014 West Side Baptist Church, 1008 SW 4th, Topeka. Private interment will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Mary will lie in state after 3 -9 p.m., Friday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka.
