Mary Anne Langdon

September 5, 1931 — June 29, 2020

Mary Anne (Bailey) Langdon, 88, of Topeka, KS, passed away June 29, 2020.

Mary Anne was born September 5, 1931, in Earlton, Kansas, the daughter of Bert and Zelma (Yockey) Bailey.

She graduated from Highland Park High School and later went on to work in the Certification Department for the Kansas State Board of Education. Mary Anne was an artist and used her skills in decorating cakes, large and small, grand and simple, for many in the community.

Mary Anne was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was very involved with the Family History Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was also a Charter Member of the Topeka Genealogical Society. With her mother, Zelma, they researched newspapers, biographies, county records, land records as well as traversing much of the country together spending countless hours visiting cemeteries and county court houses in finding lost relatives. In a time before internet and computers, they were able to find more than 6,000 family members with several family lines dating back to the 1400's. As a volunteer with the Family History Center as well as the Topeka Genealogical Society she was instrumental in teaching many how to find their own ancestors.

Mary Anne was involved with the Boy Scouts of America for 26 years working as a volunteer with the 11-12 year old boys. She was awarded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints "On My Honor" award and in 1985 was awarded the Boy Scouts of America "Silver Beaver" award. Mary Anne was the 2nd female to have received this award in the Jayhawk Council since 1974 when women were allowed to be a recipient of this award.

Mary Anne married Lawrence Victor Langdon on January 1, 1960 in Topeka. Their marriage was sealed for Time and All Eternity in the St. George, Utah temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, December 26, 2009. He preceded her in death on July 12, 1994.

Mary Anne and Lawrence taught their children the importance of service to family, friends and others when there was a need. This has left a lifelong impression of serving others and in finding joy in that service knowing that you were able to help lift another's burden.

She will be remembered for her perseverance and courage to rise above the trials and challenges that came her way. In doing so, she taught her family that just because things are hard you don't become bitter or give up. You keep pushing forward with dignity and grace to bloom where you are planted.

Mary Anne is survived by her children, Spencer (Josi Jenneskens) Langdon, Steven (Teresa) Langdon, Julie (Edward) Kluber and Michael Langdon; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two sisters, Carol Gifford-Hutchens and Debbie Bird. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Angela Phillips and a brother-in-law, James Gifford.

Mary Anne will lie in state from 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Friday, July 10, 2020 at Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals and Receptions.
