Mary Jane (Mimi) Shankland, passed away at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka on October 13, 2005 at the age of 89.
She was born January 29, 1916 in Topeka, daughter of Robert and Laura Marling Steves. She graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa in June of 1938, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi social sorority and Alpha Psi Omega honorary dramatic fraternity, in addition to having been selected as beauty queen in her senior year. At Simpson, Mary Jane met R. Carl Shankland, and married him on January 29, 1939 in Littleton, Colorado.
Mary Jane retired after many years of service for Shawnee County at the office of the clerk of the District Court. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and she and Carl were affiliated with the 49ers Square Dance Club in their younger years and more recently with the Active Prime Timers. Mary Jane is survived by her husband Carl, their three children, Michaele Willis, Kevin (Pat) Shankland, and Don Shankland, 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, and her sister, Peggy J. Semler.
Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
