Mary Henderson (97) passed away at The Gardens at Aldersgate November 28, 2021. Mary was born on March 31, 1924 in Topeka, son of Bert and Maggie (Mitchell) Furgason.
Mary grew up in Topeka attending Branner Elementary School, East Topeka Junior High School, and graduated from Topeka High School in 1942. She was a lifetime member and past president of the Topeka High Historical Society.
Mary met her future husband Glen in the library at THS. They were married on March 23, 1944. They were married 73 years before Glen's death on July 19, 2017.
Mary was employed early in life at Morells Meat Packing plant (secretary) and part-time at College Hill Pharmacy (bookkeeper), but she was mostly a homemaker. She truly loved her family. She especially loved family gatherings and preparing meals. She was a wonderful baker of pies, cakes, cookies, and other goodies. Glen and Mary made friends of the clerks and servers in retail stores and restaurants throughout Topeka.
Mary was pre-deceased by two brothers and a sister whom she dearly loved along with their families.
Mary was a charter member of University United Methodist Church. Mary served in many roles at the Church and in the United Methodist Women. She made life-long friends in her Church.
Mary is survived by her two sons Thomas C. (Cinda) and Rev. Jay B. both of Topeka, two grandsons Keith (Stefanie) of Lawrence and Kent (Gigi) of Topeka, five great grandchildren Landon, Josephine, Annie, Evie, and Maddie, and many beloved nieces and their families.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at University United Methodist Church, 1621 S.W. College Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66604. Mary's family wishes to thank her caregiver and friend Bev Raney and daughter Alea for their love and support. Thank you also to Elara Caring (especially Melissa &Vickie) and the staff at The Gardens at Aldersgate (especially the staff of the Elmhurst Community.)
