Mary Frances Hughes was born Feb 27, 1930 and went to her Lord and Savior on June 17, 2016. She was born at home in Sharon Springs, KS to Roy Lemly Smith and Ruth (Peterson) Smith. She was named for the midwife attending her birth: Mary Morton. She attended Weskan High until the last part of her senior year and then graduated from Berryton High in 1948 when her family moved to Topeka. She married Charles Robert (BOB) Hughes Feb 19, 1950. They had 67 years together on earth. They are happily reunited now.
Bob preceded her in death, along with her parents and sisters Lytal Langworthy , Mildred Leighty and brothers: John Smith & Ray Blodgett. She had 3 children, Barbara (Ben) Peter, Terry Hughes, Paul (Pam) Hughes. 3 grandchildren: Tamra (Darrel) Smith, Carrie Peter, Justin Hughes. Great-grandchildren: Brandon & Conner Meeks, Alexa Smith, Katrina Peter, & Harper Hughes.
Mary was a loving mother and took every opportunity to be with her family. She was a gracious host and her house was always full of company. She loved the Lord and made sure that everyone in her family came to know the Lord as their Savior. She worked at Hallmark Cards, Bible Supply Store, taught many different Bible studies at home and at First Assembly of God. She was church secretary at Community Baptist and served on the Area Board of the Women's Aglow during the 80s. Her hobbies were working in her garden, flower arranging, cooking, cake decorating, sewing for the family, square dancing, cruising and traveling. She loved to read and used to read approximately 20 books a week. She was a great handy man around the house, too!
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 25, 2016 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka. Interment will follow at Meriden Cemetery, Meriden, KS. Mary will lie in state after 3 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.
