Mary Elizabeth Jones
Mary Elizabeth Jones, surrounded by family and friends, died peacefully at the age of 91 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka on Saturday, February 21, 2009.
She was born in La Harpe, Kansas on December 30, 1917. She graduated from Emporia State Teachers College and began a teaching career in Clay Center, Kansas. In the 1950's she continued her teaching career in Topeka Elementary Schools, working with children in the primary grades. She earned a Master's Degree in education from the University of Colorado in Boulder in the late 1950's. She retired in 1983 with 26 years of teaching in Topeka primarily at Sheldon Elementary School. Her parents, Jason Wilson Jones (also a Kansas educator) and Bertha Filson Jones had moved to Boulder, Colorado from Manhattan, Kansas. Both parents were interred in Boulder. Mary Elizabeth Jones will be interred alongside her parents and older brother, Howard. Howard was a high school English teacher. Mary's younger brother, Frank, a career Naval Officer, was interred in Arlington National Cemetery in 2006.
Mary Elizabeth is survived by 7 children born to Frank and Mary Randell Jones: Terry Jones, Springfield, VA; Dennis Jones, Mantua, NJ; Shirley Finocchiaro, teaching in Vietnam; Steven Jones, Stafford, VA; Connie Ortman, Columbus, IN; Kenneth Jones, Harrisburg, PA, and Karl Jones, Dewitt, MI. Mary Elizabeth is also survived by Frank's second wife, Martha Jones, Saginaw, MI and her three children, Zach Taylor, Hemau, Germany; Michael Taylor, Baltimore, Maryland, and Paula Ecklesdafer, Millsboro, Delaware.
Mary Elizabeth was a long-term member of the First Baptist Church in Topeka and active community volunteer. For the last several years she has resided at Lexington Park in Topeka.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library Children's Fund, 1515 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604.
For those that wish to pay their respects, Mary Elizabeth will lie in state between the hours of 1:00-9:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 25 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. A Memorial Service for Mary Elizabeth will be held at the First Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 26. Interment will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2009 at Mountain View Memorial Park,3016 Kalmia Ave, Boulder, CO 80301
