Mary Lee Dodson, 60, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 19 at Stormont-Vail Hospital with her daughter by her side.
Mary was born on Oct. 5, 1949 to Lee and Kathleen (O'Brien) Dodson. She grew up in Topeka, having attended Wanamaker Grade School and graduating from Washburn Rural High School in 1967. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1971 with a Bachelor's degree in Spanish Education and later earned a Master's in Education from Mid-American Nazarene in 2004. She taught Spanish, French, German, and Special Education for many years at multiple school districts throughout northeastern Kansas.
She enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard in 1978 and served over 21 years in the Kansas Army National Guard, the US Army, and the US Army Reserve. She retired as a major in 2000. Her passions included dance, music, theater, swimming, and reading, often reading a book a day. Her love and concern for her little Heidi, her Dodson family, as well as her many students throughout her many years of teaching always remained her top priority.
She is survived by her daughter, Heidi Freundschuh Chermak (Tracy) of Topeka, her father, Lee Dodson of Topeka, her brothers: Jim Dodson (Mary) of Carbondale, Richard Dodson (Alyssa) of Tijeras, NM, Steven Dodson (Dianne) of Burlingame, and her sister, Kathleen Dodson Fick of Gambrills, MD.
Mary will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009 at the Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel where the family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held 10:00 a.m. on Mon., Nov 23 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Carbondale, Kansas Cemetery.
