Mary Ellen Coleman, 93, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2018.
She was born February 13, 1925, in Iola, Kansas, the daughter of Edward and Leona (Warford) Blankenhagen. She graduated from Iola High School in 1943 and later went on to nurses training at the Sisters of Mercy in Fort Scott. After completing nurses training in 1946, she worked at Mercy Hospital before moving to Topeka in 1948. She then worked in the local hospitals and did private-duty and specialized nursing. She married Donald S. Coleman on March 6, 1953 in Manhattan, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 21, 1971. Upon her marriage, Mary quit nursing and became a stay-at-home mom. She focused on raising her children and the household cats and enjoyed using fruit from the family orchard to make butter and jelly to give away to friends and neighbors. She resumed nursing in 1969, working at KNI until 1975.
Mrs. Coleman was a member of First Christian Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Survivors include sons, Donald D. Coleman, Keith A. Coleman, and Darryl L. Coleman.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Elmer W. Blankenhagen and Kenneth E. Blankenhagen.
A memorial ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. at First Christian Church, Saturday, December 15, 2018.
