Mary Blakely Voigt, 85, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at a Topeka care facility. She was born on May 1, 1924 in Topeka, the daughter of Charles G. and Loraine Sewell Blakely, Jr. She attended Potwin Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High School and Topeka High School. Mary graduated from Washburn University with a BA Degree where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She was a certified life guard and an instructor with the American Red Cross, a charter member and past president of the John Haupt Chapter of the D.A.R., and was active as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. Mary was a member of the West Side Christian Church where she was a member and past president of the Christian Women's Fellowship. Mary married A. E. "Gene" Voigt on January 17, 1948 in Topeka. He survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Carol L. Lassitter of Summerdale, AL, two sons, Bruce E. (Carolyn) Voigt of Flagstaff, AZ, Craig A. (Kay) Voigt of Topeka and six grandchildren, John Lassitter, Brad, Brent, Chelsea, Eric and Amanda Voigt. Mary was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Leon Lassitter. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Cremation will follow the services. Private inurnment will take place in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mary will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the West Side Christian Church, 432 SW Lindenwood Ave., Topeka KS 66606.
